The basketball development program, implemented by the Georgian Basketball Federation (GBF) in cooperation with the FIBA Youth Development Fund, continues its active phase. FIBA allocates specific funding for youth development among its member nations, which Georgia utilizes to the fullest. By matching these funds from its own budget, the Federation provides maximum support for the growth of basketball across the entire country.
The latest delivery of basketball equipment took place in the Imereti region. On March 17, the Federation’s transport arrived in Kutaisi, specifically at the beautifully rehabilitated sports school and basketball arena on Zurab Sakandelidze Street. With over ten coaches working at the facility, youth participation is notably high. While the Imereti region has received equipment through this program multiple times before, this visit marked another significant restock.
Buba Kvimsadze, President of the Imereti Basketball Federation, joined GBF Regional Department representatives Shalva Oniani and Aleko Petriashvili at the Kutaisi sports school. Together, they delivered a wide range of equipment to be distributed among the region’s cities, including:
-
Basketballs and team uniforms.
-
Training cones and dribbling goggles.
-
Shooting trainers (form shooting stations) and various essential accessories.
From Kutaisi, the Federation’s truck headed to Chiatura to deliver a promised, modern Euro-standard scoreboard. During the previous equipment delivery to Imereti three months ago, the need for a new scoreboard in Chiatura was identified. The local arena had been using outdated equipment, which was a challenge as the city frequently hosts regional competitions—particularly for girls’ basketball. Shalva Oniani, Head of the Regional Department, fulfilled the promise by providing the modern system through the program.
The Basketball Development Program will not conclude its season until it has reached every region of Georgia. Only a few stops remain—the next destination is Guria. The equipment delivery is scheduled to arrive in Ozurgeti on April 4.
