The Georgian National Basketball Federation expands its regional basketball development program to a new scale. The initiative has broadened to fully include girls’ basketball schools, made possible through financial support and funding from FIBA’s global girls’ basketball development program — Her World, Her Rules.
For four years now, the Georgian Basketball Federation, in cooperation with FIBA’s Youth Development Fund (YDF), has been implementing a regional development project in Georgia, which until this year covered only boys’ basketball. On the initiative of Shalva Oniani, Head of the Regional Department, and with the full support of the Federation, close cooperation also began with FIBA’s girls’ basketball development fund (HWHR). This gave the project a much larger scope and allowed it to embrace girls’ basketball as well.
Under this new large-scale initiative, two additional structural units of the Georgian Basketball Federation — the 3×3 Basketball and Women’s Basketball Development Departments — joined forces with the Regional Development Department. Organized jointly by these three departments, the first pilot 3×3 basketball tournament for under-15 girls was held at the Veris Baghi Basketball Hall in Tbilisi.
Six teams participated in the tournament, and the games were held in a highly competitive, engaging, and enjoyable atmosphere for the youth. All participants received special playing uniforms as gifts, while the top-placing teams were awarded medals alongside various special prizes and gifts.
The tournament held in Veris Baghi is just the beginning. The project started in the capital and will gradually cover all of Georgia. The main goal of the program is to lay the foundation for the popularization and development of girls’ basketball across the country, not only by organizing tournaments but also by providing the necessary material and technical resources.
