Girls have joined the Regional Basketball Development Program implemented by the relevant department of the Georgian Basketball Federation. Most girls’ basketball schools in western Georgia received various types of equipment last Monday, partially funded through FIBA’s girls’ basketball development initiative, Her World, Her Rules.
For the third consecutive year, the Regional Department of the Georgian Basketball National Federation has been implementing a program aimed at supplying the country’s regions with essential basketball equipment and, accordingly, providing maximum support for the development of the sport.
While the program continues, it has now expanded to include girls’ basketball schools as well. This expansion is funded by another FIBA program, through which the Federation’s respective department utilized the allocated tranche, added additional funding of its own, and purchased the necessary equipment for girls’ teams in four cities—Chiatura, Khoni, Vani, and Samtredia. The equipment included uniforms, basketballs, backboards, shooting machines, coaches’ boards, and dribbling training goggles.
The teams received the equipment in Chiatura, at the historic “Magharoeli” sports hall, a venue with a rich tradition in women’s basketball. In the mid-20th century, women’s basketball flourished in Chiatura, and after a long hiatus, the mining city is now on the path to revival. Girls’ basketball games are frequently held in Chiatura, with teams from neighboring districts regularly taking part.
In addition to the Federation’s Regional Development Department, the Women’s Basketball Department has been actively involved in implementing the program. Alongside program head Shalva Oniani, the Head of the Federation’s Women’s Basketball Department, Kakha Shengelia, and his assistant, Lela Tsanava, were present in Chiatura. The equipment handover was also attended by Givi Modebadze, Mayor of Chiatura Municipality, who wished the girls success and pledged his support.
Alongside the Regional Basketball Development Program, the girls’ initiative Her World, Her Rules will continue at a pace aligned with demand.
