Georgian Cup has started. Three eights-final matches were held at the Olympic Palace today and, accordingly, the names of the 3 quarter-finalists were also revealed. These are Tskhum-Apkhazeti, Mega and Olimpi.
We would like to remind you that all 11 teams of Super League and 5 teams of “A” League are participating in the cup. The teams got into 4 baskets according to the ranking and as a result of the draw, the eighth-final pairs were created. Due to the epidemic situation, the playoff series was reduced to 1 match. Consequently, today the winning teams in the eighth final reached the quarterfinals directly.
Super League outsider “Dinamo” played with dignity and lost the battle. Before the last period, Dinamo coached by Jolivet Toudjan played equally well against an opponent with much greater ambition and often even led. Tskhumi turned the game around in the third period. The team coached by Irakli Dzidziguri managed to gain an advantage at the expense of defense and fast attacks, maintained it until the end of the game and reached the quarterfinals.
Marquill Smith led the winners with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Luka Maziashvili and Nodar Gogodze collected 14-14 points each. Benjamin College was the most effective in Dinamo with 32 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Vladimer Tavakarashvili scored 23 points.
Basketball Club Mega’s progress continues. The debutant of the Super League has won the last 4 matches of the championship, reached the final of Zurab Sakandelidze and Mikheil Korkia Memorial and now he has reached the quarterfinal of the cup. The team coached by Nikoloz Cherkezishvili plays very productively. In the middle of the third period, Mega was leading 55:33, which meant victory.
Despite a solid backlog, Titebi still had a chance to succeed. The team coached by Beso Lezhava fought to the end, even reduced the gap to 5 points in the decisive minutes, but they did not have the strength to take the final step. Mega came to victory and reached the quarterfinals, where they will meet the winner between TSU and Orbi.
Demonte flannigan was the most effective in Mega with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Djimon Henson scored 18 points, Tyrell Corbin had 16 points and 8 assists. It is noteworthy that 15-year-old player Alexander Daushvili made his debut in Mega, spending 23 minutes on the court. Javion Ogunyemi was the most effective in Titebi with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Levan Babilodze and Jordan Robertson had 13-13 points each.
One of the leading teams in the Super League – Olimpi met the representative of the A League. Kavkasia coached by Beka Tsivtsivadze resisted the opponent of the Super League from the beginning and was even defeating it for a while. The Caucasians did not last long and Olimpi won the first period 29:20, then slowly, permanently increased the leadership and finally won by a convincing difference. And for Kavkasia, which has ambitions to move to the Super League, it was a good lesson.
Kakha Jintcharadze became a top-scorer with 18 points in Olimpi. Edward Ekiyor scored 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bundu Abdulai had 14 points as well. Tato Zuzadze was the most effective in Kavkasia with 20 points. Michael Balogun scored 15 points. In the quarterfinals, the rival of Olimpi will be the winner between Vera and Mgzavrebi.
3 more matches of the Cup will be held on February 17 in Tbilisi and Kutaisi.
