Through the efforts of the Regional Department of the Georgian Basketball Federation, the process of developing sports infrastructure and increasing grassroots participation in the regions is actively ongoing. This time, Federation representatives visited Ahaltsikhe and handed over a modern basketball scoreboard to the local basketball academy. At Ahaltsikhe’s newly built sports facility, where basketball plays a leading role, the guests were welcomed by the city’s municipal mayor, Varlam Tsklauri, who directly participated in selecting the optimal location for hanging the scoreboard in the hall.
The visit to Ahaltsikhe and the provision of equipment were carried out within the framework of a large-scale and successful Georgian Basketball Federation program that has been running for four years now. The unique financial model of the project lies in the fact that the Federation at least doubles the funds received from FIBA (YDF) with supplementary funds from its own budget. This makes it possible to provide assistance to every city and village where basketball activity exists.
The modern scoreboard provided under this program will be used for the first time by the basketball school, which unites more than 100 children, as well as by the professional Superleague team. It is noteworthy that for the first time in history, Ahaltsikhe is hosting Superleague matches, which is a huge step forward and a great stimulus for the local sports community.
Present in Ahaltsikhe were the head of the program and head of the Federation’s Regional Department, Shalva Oniani, along with department members Aleko Petriashvili, Mate Antia, and Irakli Pertaia. Visits to the regions will continue actively, especially since the project has expanded to include girls, with the aim of developing women’s basketball across all of Georgia within the framework of cooperation with FIBA.
