The Jr. NBA Coaches – Online continues this week with former Chicago Bulls Head coach Jim Boylen on August 5, 23:00 Tbilisi Time.
Jim Boylen began his coaching career as an assistant under Michigan State head coach Jud Heathcote. Boylen worked there from 1987 to 1992 before accepting a position with the NBA’s Houston Rockets. As an assistant coach with the Rockets, he won his first NBA Championship working for the Houston Rockets.
After his 11-year stint with Houston, he became an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors and then the Milwaukee Bucks. After 13 years of coaching in the NBA, Boylen returned to Michigan State as an assistant with the Spartans. As Tom Izzo’s top assistant, Boylen helped lead Michigan State to a 45–23 record in two years, including two NCAA appearances.
In 2013, Jim Boylen was hired by the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach as part of Gregg Popovich’s staff. He won his third NBA championship after the Spurs defeated the Miami Heat 4–1 in the 2014 NBA Finals.
In June 2017, coach Boylen was named associate head coach of the Chicago Bulls. On December 3, 2018, the Bulls promoted him to head coach when Fred Hoiberg was relieved of his duties after a 5–19 start to the 2018–19 season.
