Georgian boys ‘and girls’ youth national teams participated in the FIBA U-17 Basketball Skills Challenge qualification tournament. The matches were played remotely, in video mode, and the winner was revealed by FIBA as a result of a video review.
Georgian girls ‘and boys’ youth national teams played 4-4 matches, some of which they won, but it was not enough to advance to the next stage. The boys managed to beat Gibraltar and Latvia, but lost to Romania and Portugal and finished third in the group. The honor of the Georgian boys’ team was defended by: N2 Giorgi Makhniashvili, N1 Luka Khutsishvili, N3 Nugzar Bochorishvili, N4 Giorgi Gugutsidze and N5 Lasha Meskhi.
The girls’ team managed to beat Luxembourg, but lost to Slovakia, Portugal and Latvia and failed to reach the semifinals. The honor of our team was defended by: N1 Ekaterine Tsivtsivadze, N16 Nini Tchankvetadze, N3 Nona Tsomaia, N19 Tako Papuashvili, N21 Khatia Qeburia.
As you know, the mentioned tournament was held remotely due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the Georgian Basketball National Federation successfully managed to ensure participation in it. Our federation deserved the approval of FIBA in organizing the World Skills Challenge, which the world basketball governing organization informed our federation by letter.
